Which Auger Do You Actually Need? Choosing by Machine, Ground and Job
An auger is the drilling attachment. An auger driver is the hydraulic motor and gearbox that turns it. You need both, and the one that decides your buying decision is the driver — because its torque output determines what diameter hole you can bore, how deep, and in what ground.
That distinction catches people out constantly, and it is the reason a lot of augers get bought that never do the job they were bought for.
Start with the hole, not the machine
Almost every conversation we have starts in the wrong place. People ring up asking about a machine when the thing that determines everything is the hole they need to make.
Three numbers settle most of it:
• Diameter. A 150mm fence post hole and a 900mm utility pole hole are entirely different jobs.
• Depth. Depth multiplies the torque needed, because the auger is fighting friction along the whole flight, not just at the tip.
• Ground. Soft loam, heavy clay, compacted hardcore and rock each need a different amount of torque.
Get those three straight and the specification almost writes itself. Guess at them and you buy a driver that stalls halfway down.
Crane-mounted, excavator-mounted or mini digger?
This is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is that it depends far more on your access and your existing fleet than on the drilling itself.
Crane-mounted augers
Suited to utility pole work, where the same vehicle that bores the hole also lifts and places the pole. Reach is the advantage - you can work from the roadside without tracking a machine across a verge or a field. If you are installing poles, this is usually where you should be looking.
Excavator-mounted augers
The most versatile option and the one most contractors end up with. Excavators are everywhere, the hitch arrangements are well understood, and you get precise positioning and good down-pressure. Best all-round choice for fencing, foundations and general utilities work.
Mini digger augers
For restricted access, gardens, and jobs where a full-size machine would do more damage than the work is worth. Real limitations on diameter and depth, and you should size expectations accordingly, but for the right job nothing else gets in.
Can you use an excavator auger for utility poles?
Yes. With the right equipment, one machine can drill the hole, lift the pole and position it for installation.
Autoguide’s Pole Grab can be combined with a 40,000PXV or 50,000PXV torque head on a suitable JCB or CAT backhoe. The rear-mounted auger drills the pole foundation, while the front-mounted grab securely lifts, rotates and positions the utility pole.
This pole grab and auger combination removes the need for a second machine, helping contractors complete telecom, LV and HV pole installations more efficiently. The correct setup will depend on the pole size, ground conditions and backhoe specification.
Torque — the number nobody asks about until it is too late
Torque is what turns the auger against the resistance of the ground. Too little torque and the auger may stall, slowing the job and encouraging excessive down-pressure that can damage the flighting.
The torque required increases with the hole diameter, drilling depth and ground density. An auger driver that handles a 300mm hole comfortably in clay may struggle to drill a 600mm hole in the same conditions.
Before ordering an auger drive, check the hydraulic flow rate in litres per minute and the operating pressure in bar of the machine carrying it. If the attachment requires more hydraulic power than the carrier can provide, it will underperform regardless of the driver’s stated capabilities.
If the ground conditions are uncertain, drilling a few trial holes can help confirm what the equipment will be dealing with before committing to the full job.
For fencing work, drilling is not the only option.

When an auger is the wrong tool
We would rather explain this now than after you have hired one.
Screw piles are not an auger job. They are rotated into the ground using a suitable torque head and controlled installation process. The recorded torque is used, alongside the pile specification and design calculations, to help verify the required load capacity. It is a different application requiring different equipment.
Shallow solid rock may require another drilling method. Rock-Ripper teeth extend what an auger can achieve in hard, dense and stony ground, but they are not intended to drill through substantial bedrock.
Waterlogged ground can collapse after boring. The auger may form the hole successfully, but unstable ground can fall back in when the auger is removed. This may require specialist ground-support measures or a different installation method.
Driving posts directly is a post-driver job. When installing timber fence posts in suitable ground, driving them can be faster and more economical than boring holes and backfilling them. Hire or buy?
Hire if you bore holes a few times a year, or if you are taking on a job type you have not done before and want to prove the specification before committing capital. Our hire fleet exists partly so people can find out what they actually need.
Buy when the machine is working often enough that hire charges approach purchase cost within two or three seasons, or when being dependent on availability during your busy period is a risk you cannot take.
The arithmetic is simple. Work out your realistic drilling days per year, multiply by the day rate, and compare. We would rather hire you the right machine than sell you the wrong one.
